  • Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn (#4)
    • Main Color: approximately 100 g
    • Contrast Color approximately 50 g
  • Crochet Hook:
    • Size G/6 (4 mm) for potholder
    • Size F/5 (3.75 mm) for edging
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

  • Rows 2–38 are worked in the back loop only to create extra texture and thickness.

Foundation Chain

Ch 34.

Row 1

Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work 1 sc in each chain across.

33 sc

Turn.

Row 2

Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch).

Working in the back loop only, place 1 sc in each stitch across.

33 sc

Turn.

Rows 3–38

Repeat Row 2.

At the end of Row 38, fasten off the main color.

Edging for Single Stitch Crochet Potholder

Switch to the smaller hook and join the contrast color in any corner.

Round 1

First Side:
Work 3 sc in the corner.
Work 1 sc evenly along the edge of each row.
Work 3 sc in the next corner.

Second Side:
Work 1 sc in each stitch across.
Work 3 sc in the corner.

Third Side:
Work 1 sc evenly along the opposite edge.
Work 3 sc in the corner.

Fourth Side:
Work 1 sc in each stitch across.
Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 2

Work 1 sc in each stitch around.

In each corner, place 3 sc in the center corner stitch.

Continue around until you reach the final corner.

Hanging Loop (optional)

In the last corner:

  • Ch 10
  • Skip the corner stitches
  • Attach the loop with a sl st in the next stitch

Fasten off.

Finishing

  • Weave in all yarn ends.
